Minnesota
NACS in partnership with Deborah E. Powell Center for Women's
Health of University of Minnesota are researching on “Barriers to
Mental Health Care for the Somali Community in Minnesota”.
This innovative partnership between New Americans Community
Services and Deborah E. Powell Center for Women's Health UMN
is designed to develop research capacity for NACS and to initiate
mental health research efforts within the Somali community. Our
partnership is participatory in nature. We envision a Community-
Academic Research collaboration that is inclusive in its ownership
and process, assets-focused and efficient in its approach to produce
increased research capacity and credible research. The long-term
goal of this community-academic research collaboration is to reduce
barriers to mental health care for the Somali community in Minnesota.
The proposed project will be based on the tenets of Community-Based
Participatory Research (CBPR). This pilot project is funded by Program
